“Bizerte has approximately one thousand Catholics who live in excellent harmony with the six or seven thousand Arabs who currently live in Bizerte, to which we should add some six to eight hundred Israelites. Excepting civil servants, the Christians are almost all workers or fishermen.
Arab citizens, which on very few occasions marry French women, are mostly monogamous; peasants, not always. Those whom fortune has allowed to have several wives, have different houses for each so as to be able to have a home wherever their business or pleasure take them. Women citizens are intimidated by foreigners and tend to wrap themselves in a black headscarf.
Peasants, despite their poverty, live relatively tranquillity, keeping their few objects of value in their homes. Women peasants don’t cover their faces… Their constitution is generally robust; they have very strong calve muscles whether due to work or the packages they are used to carrying.”

There are approximately 200,000 inhabitants in Bizerte today. The city has been influenced relatively little by tourism despite being on the coast. There are a few hotels, though we noticed that the majority of guests were locals.
The new city the Archduke described has been totally developed. The same is true of Zarzouna, the old area once full of farms to the left of the canal. Here we see an image of the city taken from the old Spanish fort.
The Archduke described how local women would cover themselves with a black scarf, intimidated by foreigners. Today, the majority of women can be classified into two large groups: we could describe one as being totally westernized, while the other uses veils of diverse colors. A minority group opts to use dark veils, and some even wear the full sharia. In the latter case, the men accompanying these women tend to have bushy beards.
