“Anchors don’t take good hold of the seabed in Bizerta Bay. The latter is completely exposed to winds from the north and east. As such, large ships try to stay there as little as possible. Cargo ships rarely dare lay anchor there during the stormy season.”
Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria, Bizerte, J. Rothschild, Paris, 1900 (Prague, 1897)
We visited Bizerte by boat the first time in early May, the morning of May 2nd, after sailing from Mallorca. This is the first image we had of the area from 10 nautical miles out.
We didn’t have to lay anchor, opting instead to moor at the port. The following photo shows the two extremes of the breakwaters the Archduke saw being constructed. A large marina is currently being built on the part of the jetty with the green light. Unfortunately, it still isn’t finished, and we had to go to the fishing port beyond the breakwater in the area with the red light.
