Lo que dice el Arxiduc:

“There are 7 caulkers on the island which means that all the carpenters dedicate themselves to this. They build cocorellas, gajeta falkusas, trattas and smaller boats in Gaios and Lakka. They also make some cocorellas in Longo. Each year they make between one and three boats, including both small and large ones. Some years they don’t make any. To finish the small barkes boat requires between 6 and 7 years.

In Gaios is Master Nikolas Daljetu and another caulker. There are also two masters in Lakka; the rest are workers. Poles are made out of cypress trees. They last a long time, up to 80 years. The cypress also comes from Saint Maura and Prevesa. The spars are also chosen with their curves and are also cypress. The deck is also made out of cypress. The planks above water are cypress, while those below are made of Italian pine, larch tree or others. This wood is brought from Lefehymo and the continent. The railings are made from various types of Holm oaks: pernari, velanidia, ariades (with small acorns and leaves) and ymerodendri. The angles are made of pine or other wood. It’s best if the keel is made from olive tree, but, since adequate wood is rarely found, they’re usually made from the pernari Holm oak variety.”

Datos proyecto Nixe III:

Though during the Archduke’s visit, all the island carpenters were also shipbuilders, today we did not find much activity in this sense. In addition, the majority of boats we saw were primarily made out of plastic or fiberglass.

However, some fishermen still use wood boats, though we were surprised to see a couple of these in fields when driving along the island.

Lastly, the majority of boats in Gaios’ port are, without doubt, those dedicated to transporting tourists.
