Lo que dice el Arxiduc:

“Bizerte has six public bathhouses, or hammam, none of which are very pretty. Like in every Muslim country, men and women visit them at different times of the day.

Along the streets are numerous food shops, especially pastry shops, with the most diverse vegetables found next to bread, pastries, fowl, especially partridges, and all types of imaginable food. And, within all the pomp, the disorder is more picturesque, an ambiance which only the Moors know how to create well.

Many improvise where they sell their goods near the esplanade: here they sell cabbages; there they sell pigeons in small boxes; somewhere else they sell ceramics in all shapes, from pretty vases to vulgar cooking equipment. In addition there are peddlers selling their wares by hand.”

Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria, Bizerte, J. Rothschild, Paris, 1900 (Prague, 1897)

Datos proyecto Nixe III:

Today, commerce is one of the most noteworthy business activities in Bizerte. The shops and stalls are like those described by the Archduke. Here we can see some images of the esplanade near Rbaa Mosque.

We still find bazaars in Bizerte’s old quarter organized by specific trades and crafts: blacksmiths, carpenters, tailors, etc. As our visit to Bizerte coincided with Ramadan, we were able to see how trade adapted to this holy time, with life on the streets coming alive again after sunset.

Fishing is still an important activity both at the business and individual level. A lot of people have small boats and sail out to fish at any time of the day or night. We see some professional fishing boats in Bizerte’s old port, but the majority are in the busy fishing port, beyond Zarzouna.

Lastly, there are a fairly significant number of hotels in the Corniche neighborhood, though we had the impression that the majority were dedicated to local tourism.
