“The breakwater on the western side, which Ras Zebib protects from the north-easterly and, especially, easterly winds, was the least difficult to build. As if taking the blocks from the sea, a vertical quarry, called the lagoon quarry, was opened inside, near the tank on the left.

The blocks were transported in wagons to the docks then moved onto the ferry which, sea conditions permitting, were towed to the dock under construction.

The western breakwater starts at the casbah and crosses 1,000 metres towards Cape Zebib… The other, which goes from south to north, has the same length. Between both is a total surface area of relatively calm, 100 hectares into which the canal opens.”
