Lo que dice el Arxiduc:

“The church in Buccari (Bakar) receives a lot of visitors on Sundays; the town’s elegant set fill it up; distinguished women, robust vegliotinas (venerable old ladies), young girls from the county, suntanned sailors with wrinkled foreheads, and the joyful and youthful group from the port, all with their open and enthusiastic eyes. On one occasion, on a working day, we heard the powerful sounds of an organ resonating inside the church, as if during high mass, but it was just past midday. Curious, we entered, supposing that Buccari had the old privilege of being able to have mass at one pm. But we were surprised to find the church completely empty. There were no worshippers and no organist visible, but the organ continued to roar with wild sounds, played apparently by diabolic hands. Finally, we discovered an old man in a dark side chapel, kneeling before the altar there. We asked him about the sound and he explained, with a grave countenance: ‘Don’t be alarmed; it’s the church sexton who’s always drunk, celebrating his drunkenness that way.’”

Datos proyecto Nixe III:

The elegant, colourful church surprised us. We were told that, in its day, it was the third largest church in Croatia, a sign of the period in which the town lived its greatest splendour. As described by the Archduke in his time, it doesn’t seem that a lot of people visit the church these days either.

The print, “Bakar from the heights” was taken from the mountain just behind Bakar. Today, on that same spot from where the image was taken is a large hanging curve for the highway being built around the entire Bay of Bakar.
