Lo que dice el Arxiduc:

“The work may be the most humiliating, that which punishes Slav women, but their posture is always noble. If ever one of these brown-skinned children from the south, wearing dark clothing and hiding the fire burning in their eyes under long eyelashes were to timidly say bog (“hello”) to us, we would think a haloed figure were before us, not a human. Every now and then, the women rest in the green cool shade under a group of ash trees along the side of the road and chat happily amongst each other after having left the heavy burdens they were carrying on their shoulders atop a rock. After a short break, they get up again, and we can see them climbing for a long while up the slanted path.”

Datos proyecto Nixe III:

During our visit to Opatija we were able to interview Amir Muzur, the city’s former mayor. Amir told us how things began to quickly change precisely when the Archduke was writing his books on Opatija and Bakar. People were going from a very hard life to more relaxed work related to the tourism industry, thus only having to work hard during the tourist season and living tranquilly the rest of the year.

Without doubt, living conditions have changed a lot. In addition, years of communist government had an important impact and left society with relatively few references. As such, capitalism seems to have been installed quickly, at times showing its ugliest side: corruption and easy money.

Bakar is different, however, though the current economic crisis has left its mark. We were able to talk to Kruno Lazanja, the Director of Services for the town hall, who told us that they were working to recover the past splendour the city enjoyed from tourism years before.
