“There are certain places in the world that have been erased from people’s memories, falling into complete oblivion during centuries. Their beauty goes unnoticed; their advantages disdained. That is how the Gulf of Fiume (Rijeka) was until recently. We no longer think about the extreme value the Romans gave to this important gulf. The attempts by Charles VI and Napoleon I to foment this gulf failed due, first, to the Hungarian desire to reach the sea, indispensable for a great people for whom this effort would have implied a better future. The start of this new era dates back to the dismemberment of Fiume and the Croatian coast by the Hungarian monarchy.

For some months of the year, the most important capes are signalled with lighthouses; two trains, from the north and east, supply products to the regions segregated from the Gulf of Fiume.”
