“Entry into the port is normally easy, especially if the siroco wind is blowing. This is extremely important because it is the only dangerous wind in the Gulf of Fiume (Rijeka) pushing the boats towards the coast. It is very difficult and sometimes impossible with the bora wind (reffoli) blowing with such strength from inside the bay out that foamy eddies form extremely quickly on top of the waves. The good thing is you can head north through the Gulf of Fiume which is totally protected from the bora wind or, if you’ve already passed the entrance to Buccari (Bakar), which sometimes causes problems for sailboats, you can seek refuge just behind the cape of Porto Rè (Kraljevica). And if you reach Punta d´Ostro (Ostra) cape to the west, you can enter through the “Canal di Maltempo” (literally, “Channel of Bad Weather”) and you can anchor in Valle Bonaccia or in Dubno Bay further to the south.

If the bora wind is blowing, you can normally leave the port through the Gulf of Buccarizza (Bakarac). You simply stay as close as possible to the shore on the left and let the refolli winds take you to the gulf’s mouth. But it is almost impossible to leave from the Gulf of Buccari (Bakar) if the bora wind is strong. If you dare to try it, you have to stay very close to the shore on the east and try to row or use the steam engine to reach the Bay of Buccarizza. The winds that make it difficult to leave, also make it easier to enter, of course.”
