“When you enter the Corinthian Gulf from Patras Gulf, majestic mounts rise up on both sides. To the right are the snow-covered Patras mountains with Mount Vodidas ( Panachaiko); to the left are the transparent heights of Glokova which remind you of the mountains in Cattaro ( Kotor). The two sides end in long points crowned by fortresses, Rhion (Rio) and Anti-rhion ( Antirrio) castelli, representing the geographical limit and the strategic key of this marvelous gulf.”
“Atop the flat Rumali Point, on whose sandy beach cows and horses graze, is the Antirrio castle, an old Venetian construction built from slightly craggy sandstone. It is polygonal in shape, and, towards the front, a round bastion has two cannon slits facing the inner gulf, three towards the mouth and five towards Patras though they’re now closed. All of them have pointed arches. A swampy canal obstructed by mud separates the fortress from solid ground. The fortress has two walls heading towards this canal, joining to form an obtuse angle, with attachments on the two points with a cannon slit, and another attachment like a bridge to which a ruinous wooden bridge reaches.”
As children, we would often hear in church about the famous letter from Saint Paul to the Corinthians. As professors, we know that it’s difficult to learn in the abstract without being familiar with the concrete reality. So, finally, after so many years, the strait and city of Corinth which we come to with that abstract and faraway vision has finally been made real for us.
When we reach the gulf’s entrance, the first thing that stands out is the large bridge built not that long ago. To the left we can see Antirion with Rion to the right along with their respective fortresses just as the Archduke mentioned.
Some told us that the bridge is underused because the local inhabitants think the toll is too expensive. Many prefer to cross the strait by ferry.
After sailing under the bridge, we can see a large cement factory on the right shore. On the opposite side, we can make out the city of Lepanto (Naupactus), famous for the terrible battle with the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century.
