Lo que dice el Arxiduc:

“Among all the places in the Gulf of Fiume (Rijeka), none other is more important than the deep Buccari (Bakar) and Porto Rè (Kraljevica) bays, surrounded by mountains. Here is the port, built almost by nature itself in the depth of the wide roadstead. There are three entrances into the Gulf of Fiume from the sea, from there reaching the Gulf of Buccari. However, from that gulf entrance you cannot see the sea proper because of the numerous mountains and islands which surround this gulf, as pretty as a picture frame.

Just as the open sea is invisible from the Gulf of Fiume, the view of the Bay of Buccari is almost non-existent, only seeing its entrance at the top of the port, on the south side. This means that the bay runs parallel to the coast, shaped like a hammer: if we compare it with the handle, the two sides are shaped like the top. Of the two sides of the bay, the northern one is the most important and is called the “Gulf of Buccari” because of the town there.

For this same reason, the other side, which is half as long, is called the “Gulf of Buccarizza” (Bakarac). Both sides together measure almost two nautical miles. The shores of the Gulf of Buccari, in general, are tall and mountainous, made of limestone. Only at the back of Buccari and Buccarizza gulfs are there valleys rising up, closed off by hills. On the Buccarizza side there are also sandstone rocks without fossils and with marlstone.”

Datos proyecto Nixe III:

The three entrances into the Gulf of Fiume / Rijeka (or Kvarner Gulf) are between the continent’s coasts and the islands of Krk and Mali Losinj. Opatija is found in the innermost part of the gulf, while Bakar is to the south, just before reaching Krk. A bridge has been built to connect the continent and Krk Island a few miles to the south of Bakar.

We were able to visit Rijeka. It seemed very dynamic to us, well taken care of and with attractive historic areas in the centre.

Just before reaching Rijeka is an area full of heavy industry and the football stadium. From there we had a view of the bay looking towards Opatija.

In effect, the entrance to the Bay of Bakar is hard to spot until you are relatively close by. However, two mall lighthouses on either end of the pass make it easier. In the photo we see this entrance from inside the bay.
