“The work may be the most humiliating, that which punishes Slav women, but their posture is always noble. If ever one of these brown-skinned children from the south, wearing dark clothing and hiding the fire burning in their eyes under long eyelashes were to timidly say bog (“hello”) to us, we would think a haloed figure were before us, not a human. Every now and then, the women rest in the green cool shade under a group of ash trees along the side of the road and chat happily amongst each other after having left the heavy burdens they were carrying on their shoulders atop a rock. After a short break, they get up again, and we can see them climbing for a long while up the slanted path.”
