Mallorca

"Amongst the products constantly lacking here and worth mentioning are the following: firstly, the so-called colonial items such as sugar, coffee, cacao, cotton, tobacco, indigo, sugarcane aguardiente, coconut oil and woods used in tanning and cabinetmaking. Something similar occurs with tea, cinnamon, pepper and other spices, in addition to rice, hazelnuts and chestnuts, salted fish, cod, noble leather, cochineal, esparto, cork, the majority of perfumes and haberdashery items, writing paper, lye and many chemical products, petroleum, coal, iron and steel bars, lead, zinc, tin, brass, and copper; and the majority of tools, machines and items made in the abovementioned material; and, lastly, white glass and all types of porcelain and fine crystal items.

The goods which are sometimes scant here due to their insufficient production at times are as follows: wheat, barley, broad beans, garbanzos, potatoes, corn, anise, fine wines, salt, wax, oxen and sheep, horses, hemp, cotton thread, cotton, linen and wool fabric or that made of mixtures of these, raw skins, wrapping paper, barrels, wood for construction, passementerie, ceramics and tiles (although the manufacture of the latter has increased considerably in Sóller over the last few years).

Products which are constantly overproduced are as follows: almonds, figs, olives, oranges and lemons, capers, garlic, onions, olive and almond oil, wine, vinegar, aguardiente, liquors, chocolate, oak and pine bark for tanning, palm leaves and baskets, coral, canned food, wood blankets, boots, charcoal, stones and various construction materials.

The products for which there is an overabundance at times are: broad beans and other legumes, vegetables, oats, capers, saffron, paprika, walnuts, honey, cheese, wool and tanned leather."
