Archduk :: Majorca :: Miramar Acquisition

“In 1872, Ludwig Salvator bought Miramar, which, as a result of the Cádiz Cortes, became private property in 1811 after having been royal property since the time of James II of Majorca. In 1276, on the Miramar estate, none other than Ramón Llull founded a Franciscan missionary school dedicated to teaching Eastern languages. The school was occupied circa 1400 by the Hieronymites and later by the Dominicans. In 1485, the printing press at the Miramar monastery produced the first book to be printed on the island of Majorca. In 1876, the enlightened Archduke, familiar with these events, re-established the primitive chapel of the Trinity and erected a monument commemorating the memory of Ramón Llull. The monument was inaugurated on the 600th anniversary of the construction of the original school, which was the first missionary training centre in the history of Christianity.”
