“At age 14, a series of lingering colds left the Archduke with chronic bronchitis. The climate did not suit him in Munich, Schlackenwerth or Brandýs. Thinking that proximity to the sea could be beneficial to their son, Leopold II and Maria Antonia decided to send the Archduke to Venice. He was accompanied by his tutor, Eugenio Sforza of Montignoso, a gentleman who would never abandon him until shortly before his death in 1894 at the age of 74.”
